Atelier sessions ouvertes

This Atelier of the "Open sessions" of Lab'Urba is organized around two presentations, each examining, from its own perspective, the transformation of how built space is produced and conceived in response to contemporary crises-housing shortages on the one hand, and territorial and climate challenges on the other. The first adopts a critical political economy perspective to question the capacity of modern methods of construction to meet social housing targets in the UK, while the second is grounded in research-by-design, exploring the potential of urban design as a tool for knowledge production and anticipation within the Venetian città diffusa. While the former emphasizes sectoral and productive logics and their limitations, the latter advances a more exploratory, situated, and project-oriented approach focused on territorial and cultural dynamics. A common thread emerges around the need to rethink the frameworks-whether industrial or conceptual-that shape spatial practice.

Anya Sirota est professeure associée et Associate Dean for Academic Initiatives au Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Son enseignement et sa recherche explorent l’intersection de l’architecture et du design urbain, avec un accent sur les stratégies expérimentales et socialement engagées pour la transformation des villes.

Detroit bouscule la commode opposition entre ruine et renaissance. Pour Anya Sirota, le présent de la ville n’est pas tant structuré par une intention architecturale ou urbaine que par les agencements complexes de la gouvernance — politiques publiques, financements, philanthropie, activisme et culture — qui recomposent en permanence son territoire.

Dans une certaine mesure, la vie civique persiste en l’absence de l’État, soutenue par des formes improvisées de soin et de gestion collective ; à un autre niveau, les initiatives culturelles révèlent les compromis, les exclusions et les choix esthétiques intégrés dans les grands projets de réaménagement.

Pris ensemble, ces registres qui se chevauchent mettent en lumière, dans son analyse, à la fois les limites et les potentialités de l’aménagement urbain : non pas comme un acte souverain, mais comme un instrument parmi d’autres dans l’orchestration de l’infrastructure civique.

Prendre Detroit au sérieux, soutient Anya Sirota, c’est interroger la manière dont le design – qu’il s’agisse de l’architecture ou de la transformation métropolitaine – peut intervenir de façon critique dans les négociations qui configurent les futurs urbains.
